YANA REZNIK writes in her communiqué this week: "I cannot wait for this weekend's fun concerts. On Saturday Live at the Lounge I'm super excited to be hosting an incredible virtuoso violinist from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Robert Gupta, the one and only Armen Ksajikian on the cello from the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and Zach Dellinger, a violist from Colburn Conservatory. We will share an experience of playing Brahms' g minor quartet and blow the roof off the building :). Also Robert will blow your mind away with Ravel's Tzigane and Armen will make you cry with very rare pieces by Armenian, Georgian, and Russian composers. On Sunday I will be playing a concert of a very unique program for Horn, Soprano and Piano (see C. below). I will also perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. The concert is a result of my previous collaboration at Live at the Lounge with guests from the International Malibu Festival, which took place for the first time this summer. Corey Klein, a Curtis Graduate and festival's Music Director has chosen a beautiful program that is so rarely heard. We will be also joined by soprano Alina Roitstein." B. SUNDAYS LIVE Chamber Music Series - Free

Program
Selections from J.S. Bach: Well-Tempered Clavier and other works to be announced

The HELIOS GUITAR QUARTET takes a new look at the potential for this now well-established instrumental ensemble. All four members are current or former students of WILLIAM KANENGISER, founding member of the seminal Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. The Helios Guitar Quartet extends the range of the ensemble by including two unusual guitars: one, a seven-string guitar allowing for extremely low bass notes, and also a soprano guitar, re-strung so as to give notes in a much higher register than guitars are usually capable of. This expanded range of pitch allows them to embark on their current project, a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental work The Well-Tempered Clavier, originally for keyboard, but here arranged for Helios by quartet member MICHAEL KUDIRKA. The ensemble, which was among the winners of last April's Beverly Hills Auditions, is preparing this work for several concerts commemorating Bach's 325th birthday in the coming year. The Passion of Joan of Arc (French: La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc) is based on the trial records of Joan of Arc. The film, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer and staring Renée Jeanne Falconetti, is widely regarded as a landmark of cinema, especially for Falconetti's performance, which has been described as being among the best in film history.

"You cannot know the history of silent film unless you know the face of Renée Jeanne Falconetti. In a medium without words, where the filmmakers believed that the camera captured the essence of characters through their faces, to see Falconetti in Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (1928) is to look into eyes that will never leave you." - Roger Ebert

G. LA Times' MARK SWED writes a glowing review of iPalpiti

MARK SWED writes in his review, "iPalpiti crosses L.A.'s cultural divide at Disney":

"[Maestro Eduard] Schmieder is an authoritative conductor. A tall and serious Russian of the old school, he goes in for intense expression and dug-in string sonorities that reverberated through Disney with so much power that I wondered for a moment whether the loudspeakers on stage were plugged in. They weren't; they were left over from a Lyle Lovett concert in Disney the night before...."

K. Southern California Vocal Events
  LAURI D. GOLDENHERSH's Weekly Highlights

Can you hear the crickets? The sound of summer quiet is here, and that makes room for a precious few extraordinary events. Don't neglect your inner vocalist.

Thursday, July 29, 2010 marks the last of four sing-along concerts that have been getting raves from my readers. The First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica, home to many other inspiring musical events each year, hosts this 'Summer Sing-Alongs' series every year, and it's a wonderful opportunity to enjoy and/or partake of great music with local musicians and a very diverse audience. STEPHEN GOTHOLD (usually of First United Methodist Church in Pasadena and Chorale Bel Canto) will conduct Haydn's aptly-chosen MASS IN THE TIME OF WAR. A mere $15 gets you in, gets you a score, and includes a lovely snack. Tickets are available at the door. For more information, call (310) 393-8258 or click:
http://www.santamonicaumc.org/music/

Sunday, August 1, 2010, offers two operatic choices, both potentially involving gourmet food. It begs the question: are you an indoor or outdoor concertgoer?

The first is a monthly benefit hosted by CENTER STAGE OPERA, an event entitled 'Amici della Musica', which takes place at Angelo's Ristorante Italiano in Chatsworth. One very reasonable price includes dinner, tax and tip, and a diverse program from the company's creative team, soprano SHIRA RENEE THOMAS and tenor DYLAN F. THOMAS. For more information and to make reservations, call (818) 517-4102 or click http://www.centerstageopera.org

Also on Sunday, August 1, 2010 is the much-anticipated concert performance of Bizet's CARMEN, with the LA PHILHARMONIC, the LA MASTER CHORALE, the LA CHILDREN'S CHORUS, and a cast of marvelous soloists, all conducted by GUSTAVO DUDAMEL at the Hollywood Bowl. Our coverage is usually focused on smaller organizations, but this stellar event could not be left out. For information, click http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets/performance-detail.cfm?id=4253

The rest of the summer looks exceedingly quiet, but there is one more event to include, by popular request. If you don't have your tickets yet, there is still a chance to attend PACIFIC CHORALE's Choral Festival concert on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 5:00PM. This immensely popular free event is held annually, and is officially sold out, but there will be a stand-by line at the concert on the day of the performance. The Festival Chorus is comprised of invited choirs from the larger community, and the program will feature works by Mozart, Fauré, Vaughan Williams, Bruckner, and Bach, as well as American folk songs and spirituals. For more information, click: http://tinyurl.com/34l3ncg

Stay cool, enjoy your summer, and thank you for supporting live singing!

See you soon,
Lauri D. Goldenhersh

The ensemble is preparing this work for several concerts commemorating Bach's 325th birthday in the coming year. Read about the Helios Guitar Quartet, watch, and listen by clicking:

Composer/arranger GEORGE SARAH has scored numerous episodes for television and his songs have been featured in over 100 TV shows and films. In Aug 2008, he composed music for the ceremonies at the 2008 summer Olympic games in Beijing, China. Sarah frequently performs in the Los Angeles area and has been a guest twice on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. This will be Sarah's second Grand Performance concert.
