D. Southern California Guitar Recitals
  GEORGE GUTMAN's Weekly Summary
  For the full calendar, click:
  http://ocgc.org/pages/SoCalEvents.htm

We have one free events this week, RICHARD DAWSON appears at the Santa Monica Public Library on Saturday afternoon. That evening EVA BENEKE will perform her transcription of Bach's second violin partita with vocalists (including the famous Chaconne). It's in a small venue in Brentwood, but you can try for tickets, I heard her last weekend in her final DMA recital at USC in a performance that was very beautiful and highly enlightening. Also on Saturday evening, we have another opportunity to hear Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez, this one in Oxnard with CARLOS GONZALES and the Ventura College Symphony Orchestra.

Cheers,

  For the full calendar, click:

Buzz-buzz. Those aren't bees. The buzz that's been flying all over Southern California of late seems to be connected with THE INDUSTRY, a new and very adventurous opera company whose first production, 'Crescent City' is causing quite a stir. The show premieres tonight (Thursday) in Atwater Village, billed as a 'hyperopera' and in collaboration with no fewer than six respected and challenging visual artists to create a world of their own. Even the seating is beyond imagination, designed to serve a variety of needs and create different experiences: You can sit around the perimeter of the "city", get a birds-eye view from the skybox, settle into a custom-made bean bag chair in the middle of the action (in intimate proximity of one of our Lauri's Listers, countertenor TIMUR BEKBOSUNOV's, as 'Deadly Belle'), or wander the perimeter on the Pedestrian Pathway, allowing you to see the show from a variety of angles. This delightfully ballsy company has already garnered praise and financial support from a diverse group of fans, and is making headlines as well as waves. Also featured are GWENDOLYN BROWN, CEDRIC BERRY, JONATHAN MACK, ASHLEY FAATOALIA, MARIA ELENA ALTANY, JI YOUNG YANG, and LILLIAN SENGPIEHL. Performances continue through May 27, but get your tickets early - many (and hopefully all) shows will sell out. Get information and tickets by clicking:
http://tinyurl.com/7twlhbh

More opera is taking over the Southland this week, too, with many productions bringing a fresh look to classic pieces: PACIFIC OPERA PROJECT's 'Cosi' ignites Civil War-era Georgia at the new Porticoes Theatre in Santa Monica. With only four performances from May 12-20, get your seats now by clicking:
http://tinyurl.com/7twlhbh

REPERTORY OPERA's 'Don Giovanni' opened Wednesday night in Pomona, and LA OPERA's 'La Boheme' starts Saturday. (Search Twitter.com with the hashtag #LAOBoheme for details on Wednesday's dress rehearsal!) VINEYARD TOURING OPERA continues their traveling run of 'Tosca' through Sunday, and PACIFIC LYRIC ASSOCIATION brings a steamy 'Carmen' to Oceanside. Finally, MAHMA combines operatic tales with its sister genres of theatre and silent film, with a very unique show in Malibu on Saturday and Sunday. Take a deep, "diaphragmatic" breath and check the calendar for details on all of these luscious options.

We must also give sincere kudos to those celebrating big birthdays: St. JAMES' EPISCOPAL CHURCH marked the 100th anniversary of its iconic building and acclaimed organ this year, and this Sunday they offer their annual 'Concert of Remembrance', starting at 4:30PM. A concert from organist TODD WILSON will follow at 6:00PM. On Saturday, the TOWNE SINGERS celebrate '25 Years of Choral Excellence' at Glendale's Alex Theatre, and VOX FEMINA passes their 15th milestone. Thanks to all of these organizations and ensembles for providing us with beautiful music for so many years. Keep up the wonderful work!

I hope to see you making the rounds through these fascinating events. But whatever you do this week, thank you for supporting live singing!

* "a thoroughly pleasant, high-ceilinged studio space in a private residence ... proved sonically warm and clear, ideal for this kind of intimate music making." - JOHN HENKEN LA Times

Program
J.S. Bach: D-Minor Partita (with vocalists)

"Eva Beneke's transcriptions and performances of Bach's magnificent music are presented as if Bach had written them for the guitar."
- Pepe Romero

Bach's famous 2nd Partita in D Minor will be performed in its entirety by EVA BENEKE in an ambitious transcription for solo guitar.

The juxtaposition of Bach's a cappella chorals with all movements of the D-minor Partita reveals an unbroken connection between Bach's secular and spiritual work. It exposes the listener to the personal tragedy of the death of Bach's first wife Maria Barbara and the subsequent consolation Bach must have found in his faith and in his work. As the final movement, the "Chaconne" is presented in an arrangement for guitar and two voices highlighting the wordless chorale quotations hidden within the piece.

German guitarist EVA BENEKE studied at the Berlin University of Arts. She graduated with a Masters in Music Education and completed her studies at the Franz Liszt Hochschule in Weimar, where she received the prestigious solo-artist diploma in 2007. Eva was awarded first prizes at guitar-competitions in Italy, the Netherlands, and Los Angeles. She currently teaches at Whittier College and holds a teaching assistantship at the USC Thornton School of Music, where she is pursuing a Doctorate. Read about EVA BENEKE by clicking:

Mark Robson: 24 Preludes for the Left Hand

"Twenty-four Preludes for the Left Hand" honors a venerable tradition created by composers that included J.S. Bach, Chopin, Scriabin, and Shostakovich, who each wrote suites of short pieces in each of the major and minor keys. This collection is unique in that the preludes are composed for one hand only, which situates it as well within the specialized repertoire devoted to the left hand.

UCLA Organ Studio
Schoenberg Music Building
UCLA
[WestSide][Free]
Park in P2 ($11). For directions and a map, click:
http://www.ucla.edu/map/

ensemble FRET is a performance collective founded in 2012 by BUZZ GRAVELLE, WALTER MARSH, and PETER YATES. Its programs and events feature music for guitar, mandolin, and arpeggione (bowed guitar), whether solo, in duos and trios, or in expandable combination with guest vocalists and instrumentalists. Results range from intimate art-song to massed guitars. In every event is music unheard-of, written or premiered within the past year.

Program
Hugo Wolf (1860-1903): Two Songs
 Gesang Weyla and Das Ständchen
Josef Haydn (1732-1809) Baryton Trio
Peter Yates (b.1953): Fortune My Foe:
62 variations on the Hanging Tune (2011)
 with NADIA SHPACHENKO piano
Josef Matthias Hauer (1883-1959): Vier Stücke
Buzz Gravelle (b.1970): Work for Fretless Guitar
J.S. Bach (1685-1750): Three Sinfonias: No.2, No.9, No.7
Theodore Norman (1912-1997): Dance Suite

WALTER MARSH performs solo character-pieces by Josef Hauer, the mysterious and cantankerous co-inventor of 12-tone music. PETER YATES, with special guest NADIA SHPACHENKO, plays all 62 of his variations on "The Hanging Tune," for piano and guitar. BUZZ GRAVELLE takes it all off and goes fretless. Trios by Haydn (a seldom-heard work for Baryton), Bach (3 sad Sinfonias), and 20th-century guitar innovator Theodore Norman (a bent dance suite presented in celebration of the centenary of his birth).

Torquato Tasso's epic poem, La Gerusalemme liberata, published in 1581 tells mythologized tales of the first crusade. Amongst those tales is the tragic love story of Clorinda and Tancredi. Clorinda, a warrior maiden, joins the Muslim defense of besieged Jerusalem. Christian knight Tancredi falls in love with Clorinda, but during a night battle he slays her not realizing her true identity until it is too late. As she dies she forgives him and accepts Christian baptism.

Monteverdi's dramatic cantata, Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, is set to Tasso's text of the tragic tale. Composed as entertainment for an aristocratic wedding in 1624, Combattimento was not published until 1638. Monteverdi's introductory text to the piece directs both the theatrical action and the musical performance in specific detail. With this in mind, it is a great treat to see a live staging of selections from this work at the Clark.

Program - Rosary Mantra
Lou Harrison: Suite for Violin with String Orchestra (1996)
Terry Riley: Olson III (1967) - U.S. Premiere

When California maverick composer Lou Harrison found the bulkiness of the American gamelan was limiting performances of his ravishingly persuasive Suite for Violin, he trimmed a few sections and made an all-strings version. This immanently portable adaptation should enter the standard concerto repertory of 21st-century orchestras.

The seductive siren call of Terry Riley's music gained him a major commission in Sweden, but like the mythic Greek sailors lured to shipwreck, the premiere - broadcast live on Swedish radio - was as calamitous as any in music history. Overshadowed by his landmark phenomenon In C, Riley's astonishing conductorless Olsen III asks a large ensemble of instrumentalists and singers to listen as they have never listened before.

With its motto "music at the edge," JACARANDA is a series of adventures offering the cornerstones of music from centuries past next to new and modern music. Each concert program has a point of view. Artists are drawn from the Southland's finest and premier international guests. Read about Jacaranda by clicking:
